Health and Safety

It can be scary to bring home a tiny, helpless baby. You are afraid to handle them for fear that they might break; however, it won’t take long for that feeling to go away. The feeling that lasts however, is worrying over their health and concern for their safety. In fact, that worry will grow as they grow. It will help if you are prepared and know what to be concerned about and what to ignore.

Baby Car Seats Explained

In years past, parents would drive holding their infant in their laps and kids would jump around in the back seat, unrestrained. Many mothers talk about the years gone by when they would actually change their infant’s diaper while sitting at a stop light; some were daring enough to change the diaper while driving! Today, this action would be utterly impossible because our little ones are restrained in car seats, for good reason.

The car seat is used to protect an individual of small stature by holding him in place, should there be a collision. This seat is equipped with a safety harness and is secured to the vehicle’s seat with the existing seat belt or latch system.

In the U.S., car seats for children up to 24 months are mandatory. Never place a rear facing infant safety seat in front of a vehicle’s active airbag. If this air bag deploys, it could cause severe head injuries or even death to the little one.

Car Seats Expire

Many parents are unaware that there are expiration dates on car seats. The majority of the car seat’s expiration dates are visible on the seat. It is not wise to purchase a used car seat if you are unaware of the seats entire history. Never continue to use a car seat after it has been used in a collision.

Baby Monitors

Parents should take the time to investigate baby monitors before choosing a brand for use in the home. There are two basic types of monitors: audio and audio/video. Some are analogue and others are digital, but they perform essentially the same function. Some monitors detect an infant’s breathing or heartbeat and give an alarm if breathing stops for too long a period. Others provide only audio to inform parents when a baby is awakened. There are many other high-tech features available including color video monitors in high definition, motion detectors to identify intruders and infrared video so parents can view a child without opening doors and turning on lights, which can awaken the baby.

All models consist of a base unit, which is placed in the baby’s room, and a receiver, which goes in the parents’ bedroom. The base unit receives data from the crib and nursery and transmits this information by radio frequency to the parents. There are many frequencies employed by modern electronic devices and there may be interference caused by cell phone operation or other devices being used in the area. Many models offer a variety of frequencies so parents can choose the one offering the clearest signal. Digital monitors encode the signal so other people cannot pick up the sounds on their electronic devices. Parents may wish to choose a monitor that operates on a different frequency than other electronic gadgets used in the home.

Most monitor’s base units operate on both AC or DC… Read the rest

Baby Safety at Home

A baby’s safety is vital and can only be provided by those around him or her. Parents or guardians have to ensure that the baby’s immediate environs, the home, are safe and secure. Even though babies may not move much when they are really young, you can never be too careful putting safety devices in place. Start off by making sure the crib is comfortable and well protected. This may include having bars around the crib. This will keep the baby safe from pets if you have any, your other children and any other unforeseen danger. A mosquito net is also essential to prevent your baby from getting infections from mosquito bites.

As your baby begins to grow and explore, more measures have to be taken and put in place. Young children are curious about everything around them. They want to touch, feel, eat, reach for, crawl towards and, once they start walking, go for everything. To avoid fatalities in the home, baby proofing devices are available that you can easily install. Alternatively, you could have a baby proofing expert do it for you. This will guarantee safety all over the house. Some of the devices that can be incorporated include;

• Electric socket covers, cord clamps and cable tidy – These are necessary to protect babies from electrical outputs and cables. The cable tidy ensures that no cables are left hanging or unattended thus reducing risks of injury.

• Playpens and gates – Playpens are safe structures that keep… Read the rest

Pool Safety

Each year as the summer heat begins to sizzle, families flock to backyard pools, lakes, beaches and water parks. For most children, nothing provides a more refreshing form of physical activity or chance to socialize with friends than a dip in the pool.

As inviting as the water might be, parents must recognize the danger that it can present to the safety of their children. Each year children die or suffer serious injury from drowning and near-drowning. While most children drown in swimming pools, many drownings also occur in bathtubs, buckets, wading pools, spas, dog dishes, toilets, coolers and other containers that hold water. Many parents are unaware that a child can drown in as little as an inch of water, which makes virtually any container a drowning hazard. Almost every instance of drowning and near-drowning could be prevented by providing constant, uninterrupted adult supervision, installing childproof barriers around the pool and teaching children to swim and survive in the water. Before introducing your child to the water make sure that you have taken the necessary precautions.

5 Steps to Pool Safety

Step 1: Consult your pediatrician

Your pediatrician can inform you of the best age for introducing your child to the pool. Many public pools and lakes can pose a health risk to unvaccinated infants. A pediatrician can provide you with the professional medical advice that will help to ensure a safe first experience for your child.

Step 2: Install pool barriers.

  • A minimum of five feet

Baby Bed Rails

Though it’s hard to believe your teeny baby will ever outgrow her crib, our little bundles do grow quickly, and the need will eventually arise for your little one to make the transition from crib to big-kid bed. Maybe a new sibling is on the way, or maybe they’ve just finally outgrown the crib. When the time comes, you’ll want to be prepared when it arrives.

Many parents tend to focus on the bed itself-an attractive headboard, a good box frame, a comfortable mattress-and those things are important. But don’t overlook your child’s safety by failing to purchase a bed rail. It’s easy to assume that your child stays put all night while they slumber, but unless you’ve stayed up all night watching them sleep, you don’t really know how many times during the night their crib rails keep them from hitting the floor.

When looking for a bed rail, there are several factors that are essential to consider:

1. Sturdy- While a stronger rail may cost a bit more, it’s worth the expense to ensure that your child is safe while they sleep. Furthermore, should you opt for a less expensive, more flimsy rail, the likelihood of your having to replace a broken rail is high, probably resulting in more money spent than had you bought the more expensive rail from the start.

2. Breathable- While a simple piece of plywood would do the trick, it will block your child in with little air flow. This is especially… Read the rest

Drawer Locks

When you are expecting a baby or holding your newborn, baby proofing is probably far from your mind. It can be hard to imagine this tiny helpless baby as a curious and sometimes defiant older baby or toddler. But when you are expecting or before your baby is mobile are the best times to baby proof your home. Once your baby begins to move around you will be quite busy keeping up with him or her, so take the time to baby proof before it is needed and you will be glad you did later. Drawer locks for babies are among the most important pieces of baby proofing equipment out there; here are some tips on choosing the best drawer locks for you and how to decide where you need to put them.

Types of Drawer Locks

If you are renting your home or simply do not want to drill holes into your drawers to attach drawer locks, consider an adhesive drawer lock. These types of locks attach to drawers with a strong adhesive and when installed correctly will keep baby out of dangerous drawers and will not damage the drawer.

If putting holes in your drawers is not an issue, a magnetic lock is a great option. They are attached with screws, making them very secure and they come with a key that works with all of the drawer locks you install. The magnetic key unlocks all of the drawer locks with a simple turn. The only thing… Read the rest

Baby Electrical Safety

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 2.5 million children are hurt or killed each year in home-based accidents, including drowning, burns, choking, and falls. As a result, many parents make the choice to baby proof the most dangerous aspects of their home. American families rely very heavily on electricity and electrical products, making electric outlets and cords one of the more important areas of the home for parents to baby proof.

Electric outlets are fairly enticing to new crawlers and walkers. They are close to the ground, and the holes are the perfect size for inserting small toys or paperclips. Thus, it is important that parents research ways to protect their little ones from electric outlets. The most inexpensive way to childproof them is to purchase small plastic caps that plug directly into the outlet. These plugs prevent baby from inserting foreign objects into the outlet. A downside to these plastic caps is that the caps are small enough for a child to put them inside of their mouths. The other drawback is that in order for an adult to use the outlet, the caps must be removed. This can prove to be cumbersome to the adult. In addition, if the child is able to remove the plug from the outlet, the child then has access to the outlet.

A universal outlet cover is another option for parents looking to childproof electric outlets. A universal outlet cover includes spring-loaded safety plates that slide over the outlet once… Read the rest

Infant Seat

A baby infant seat is quite possibly the single most important purchase you will make for your new baby. In addition to providing safety in an accident, baby infant seats need to allow room for your little one to grow and a comfortable place to ride in the car.

All baby seats have to meet federal safety standards, so you can be assured that your baby will be safe in whichever seat you choose. Some have placed themselves at the top of the list when it comes to safety and comfort for your baby. A good place to begin your search is Consumer Reports, an organization that does extensive research on important factors such as safety, quality and affordability.

Factors to Consider

Safety

The most important factor to consider when purchasing baby infant seats is safety. While all seats meet the minimum federal standards for safety, some will exceed those regulations and provide better protection in areas such as side impact, and may offer better harnessing configurations to protect little bodies. Choose a seat that has harnessing features you can easily use. Straps that resist twisting, chest clips that open and close easily and removable bases are all features that can add to a seat’s ease of use.

Quality

Baby infant seats need to last through your child’s first year at least, so the craftsmanship and materials are important in choosing a seat. Look for a thick, sturdy cover, especially at pressure points such as the bottom where your… Read the rest

Crib Netting

Babies bring a lot of joy into the family but many times, this joy also comes with much anxiety. Over recent years one area of concern includes the crib. Items including bumper pads, pillows, and stuffed animals, all known to pose a risk of suffocation to infants, have no place in the crib anymore. Baby crib netting, another popular item for use in the crib, features both pros and cons that parents should know about when determining if they should use one or not.

One of the primary benefits to using baby crib netting includes keeping pets out of the crib. This practice remains especially important in households with cats. Cats have a tendency to snuggle with all family members, including sleeping babies. If a cat can jump into the crib with an infant, the baby may obtain scratches. The risk of suffocation by the cat remains a concern, as they tend to lie close to the baby’s face and head. During warm summer months parents may find these tents beneficial in keeping insects away from their infants while they sleep.

Another benefit to baby crib netting includes the ability to keep the little one safe if they have begun to try climbing out of the crib. Although many parents will choose to move the child into a bed, some children are not quite ready for that move. For these young children, the addition of baby crib netting will prove beneficial unless the child can stand. If the child… Read the rest

Bed Rails

As soon as babies can walk, they start getting into things. This causes most parents go through baby-proofing to keep their child safe. The problem is they start getting out of things, too. This can be dangerous, especially when a toddler who is getting better at getting around still sleeps in a crib. At this stage, a crib has become outgrown and a larger child bed is still too big. This is what toddler beds with bed rails are for. There are considerations to take when choosing bed rails just as when choosing the right crib.

Why Bed Rails are Important

When sleeping in a crib, babies and young toddlers are used to the sides keeping them from falling out. In the transition to a toddler bed, there is a tendency to roll right off the mattress during sleep. Toddler beds are made to be closer to the ground, but avoiding falling off the bed altogether is best. Bed rails help to prevent rolling off the bed not only by providing a barrier, but also by alerting the child that they are close to the mattress’ edge. This helps to train a child to sleep within the boundary of the mattress.

Varieties of Rails

Bed rails for toddler beds are available in two main varieties. The first is part of the bed frame’s construction. The second is purchased separately and attached or removed when needed. When selecting bed rails, it is important to look out for safety. Bed rails… Read the rest
