Baby Mattress

Another important feature to have in your nursery is a baby mattress and mattress pads. A baby mattress provides the ideal balance of cushion and firmness to support healthy growth and development for your baby. Baby mattresses typically come in a standard size that fits most cribs. While babies are not too choosy about their sleep location, baby mattresses should be on the firmer side. This is vital for ensuring that your baby’s face does not sink down into the mattress if he or she rolls over when sleeping. Baby mattresses constructed with multiple layers will withstand more wear and tear over time. Baby mattress pads are essential for providing a waterproof barrier to protect the mattress from diaper leaks and other spills.

Crib Mattress

One of the joys of preparing for a new little addition to your family is getting their room ready and all of the little details that go into its preparation. One of the items you have most likely given time and thought to before buying is your baby’s crib and bedding. How about the mattress for the crib? Most likely, one of the first things that will come to mind is comfort. The other point and one of the main ones to consider is the safety factor and selecting a style that will work well with your crib. Here are a few things for your consideration:

* Check the size of the crib in comparison to size of the mattress. It seems simple and basic enough as most cribs and crib mattresses come in standard sizes so it shouldn’t be a big issue. Every once in a while you may find one that doesn’t fit quite well, so just double check. As a rule, the mattress should fit tightly inside the crib, without a noticeable gap between the mattress and crib frame. If you can fit more than one finger between the crib rail and the mattress, it’s not a good fit.

* Find a mattress that is fairly firm. From an adult’s point of view, soft pillow tops and mattresses may seem like a good choice, but babies can’t yet move themselves from positions should their face sink into the mattress when they turn over, so they need… Read the rest

Baby Mattress

Babies spend up to 18 hours a day sleeping, so choosing a good crib mattress ranks as one of the most important purchases a parent will make. A quality baby mattress may make the difference between a good night’s rest and a wakeful, uncomfortable night for both you and your baby. Comfort issues, however, pale in comparison to concerns about your child’s safety. Before purchasing a mattress, consider firmness, size and mattress components in order to provide a safe, comfortable sleep for your baby.

Buy a correctly sized mattress. If you can fit two fingers between the mattress and crib, the mattress is too small. Larger gaps present suffocation risks. Since most crib mattresses and cribs measure 51 5/8 inches by 27 1/4 inches, size shouldn’t present a problem unless you have a homemade crib.

Buy a firm mattress, whether you choose one with innerspring coils or a less expensive foam mattress. Both types will provide a safe sleeping environment for your child provided they are of good quality. Mattresses that are too soft may increase the risk of suffocation and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Squeeze a foam mattress to make sure it springs back quickly. Some parents prefer foam because it weighs less and makes bed changing easier. If you do opt for innerspring coils, note that Consumer Reports recommends mattresses with 135 to 150 coils and a wire gauge of 15.5 or lower.

Some parents opt for mattresses made of organic materials, often wool… Read the rest
